It's 6am and you stumble into the shower to get prepare for your day and suddenly you feel water inching up your feet, Yuck!. Clearing clogged drainage is something most people want to avoid because it’s such a unsavory job . Every now and then though you find yourself facing this nasty bit of business .

So whats the recipe for a clogged drain?

To start you'll need some material such as hair, dust and particles to become trapped in the area between your bathroom drainpipe and the drainage pipes that flow beneath . Everyday products like soaps, shampoos, detergents and the like are needed to build up around the solid material. When this mass becomes large enough to stop any water from flowing freely. Bam! Your clogged drain is done.

Ready to get that drain open now . OK before we panic, is the stopper plugged in! In the context of our story it is 6am and we haven't had our coffee yet after all so this mistake is possible .

If you look in the drain can you see the obstruction ? If its hair can you remove the screen over the drain and get a grip on it? Or is it to far down or to packed in there? If you can, get a hold of it grab as much as you can and carefully drag up as much as you can. If you can't get a grip of it then you need to start looking for plumbers to help you with this problem.


If your tub has a drain assembly then unscrew the drain cap and try the same thing .

If the drain assembly looks difficult and frightening then you may want to call a plumber to deal with taking it apart and putting it back together.

Now if the difficulty is in the sink, the procedure is much the same as with the with the shower or tub.

If you can't get a hold of it a wire hanger may well help you reach. Make sure you are very cautious that you are not to aggressive with it though so it doesn't cause any damage.

If the blockage cannot be pulled out with the help of the wire hanger, then there are some other methods but they can generate more troubles then they resolve.

You may think a chemical drain clearing product is the solution, until you realize the chemicals used can harm your bathroom fixtures , accessories, and you! Some are corrosive and some are not very environmentally friendly .

If these solutions don't work , getting a professional Plumber in to take care of the problem it may be more cost effective if your not comfortable in dealing with a problem and end up making more problems for yourself. Plumbers or drains service companies are equipped with tools that can remove clogs with great speed and effectiveness. It may well cost you some money, but a plumber’s knowledge may set you at ease that the problem has been handled correctly and wont be back soon, to cause you to lose more time and money dealing with this nasty bit of trouble.
